About this site
This site isn't about anything per se. It is my personal project to re-learn the discipline of regular self-led writing.
When we are young, we learn to write. There is a freedom in those early years where anything goes. Sharing our ideas, thoughts and imagination is an end in itself. Everything we do is good enough to be proudly raised up to the fridge door.
As we get older, the necessity of an educational curriculum directs our writing to serve a purpose. Structures such as "Photosynthesis is...", "Let $x\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, then..." and "The causes of the First World War are..." buffer and blinker what we write but take away the opportunity for imagination.
This continues as we move through our education into work. Unless we specialise in a form of creative writing, we unlearn playfulness of trying and tying together words. Give me a roomfull of child's toys and I struggle to see the imaginative world I can create; Give me a blank slate in an empty diary, blog or social media account and I struggle to think how put words together.
Language is our way of catching ideas and thoughts, turning the from the ethereal to the concrete. A thought that isn't caught becomes, unmourned, a shadow and then nothing. It gets displaced by the ideas that have been given substance, other people's ideas. This process smothers our own ability for understanding how we think.
This site isn't about anything per se. By forcing myself to write on a publically-available platform, I force myself to pay more attention to what I think.
